A Paris native, Tim Darni moved from the French capital to Les Sables d’Olonne back in 2013 with the Mini Transat already in the back of his mind.
“I was a spectator for the start of the 2008 Vendée Globe and I loved it. I wondered how one could get there and soon after the idea of the Mini Transat emerged” explains the young sailor. He has sailed for as long as he can remember, mostly cruises with his father. He set out to work in offshore sailing just a few months removed from graduating high school. “I started working with Arnaud Boissières and then I bought my Mini 6.50. Soon after I set up my business as a boat preparator” explains Tim. He has since then competed in the double handed 2013 Transat Jacques Vabre with Lionel Régnier on a Class40 and was a crewmember on the Olmix trimaran helmed by Pierre Antoine, winner of the 2018 Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe in the Rhum Multi category. “These last two years I’ve been spending more time on my Mini Project. I’ve entirely refitted my boat” he says about his 18-year-old Manuard designed boat. “It isn’t a boat that can win anymore, by I’ve got the advantage of knowing every inch of it” adds the “Sokanaa Jus de canne” skipper. The Mini Transat will be his fourth transatlantic, but his first single handed.
“The big unknown for me is spending that much time at sea without means of communication. My goal is first and foremost to finish the race and to achieve this dream I’ve had for the last 10 years. And if I managed to get a Top 10, I’d be very happy” he concludes. Tim Darni has already showed promise on the circuit with his “old” prototype by finished 5th of the Les Sables – Les Açores en Baie de Morlaix in 2020. He hopes that this Mini experience will serve as a springboard for the future.
