Doing some in-depth study of the weather and some serious amounts of offshore training were among my original objectives. I quickly got a grasp of the fact that to make things easier logistically, singlehanded sailing was a good option, and after a lot of chatting with Charlotte Méry, who competed in the 2017 edition, I realised I could have a crack at that within the context of the Mini Transat”, explains Tanguy Aulanier, a trained engineer.

Once the decision was made, he turned his professional career on its head, quitting his job in finance in Paris and joining the design office at the Technologie Marine yard, in Saint-Philibert, south-west Brittany, forming a closer bond with the sea in the process. I’m really happy to be at the start because that in itself is already an almighty obstacle course. Managing to go all the way is the next hurdle now. In terms of competitive results, my boat (an Ofcet 6.50 launched in 2015, editor’s note) has always finished in the top third of the leader board. As such, I know that she has the potential to rank that high, which would be consistent with my results this season”, explains the native of Paris, whose boating background of summer training sessions on a sailing dinghy at the Yacht Club de Carnac when he was a kid and IRC and J80 races when he was a student, are likely to seem a long way off as he sets sail on his transatlantic passage…
