In 2019, having previously taken part in various student races and then some J80 racing on a fairly sporadic basis, Sophie Monier climbed aboard Christophe Rateau’s Class40 for the Rolex Fastnet Race. It triggered a whole new passion. “I was impressed by the power of the boat and, although it was too big for me, I was completely won over by offshore racing”, explains the Parisian, who is a partner in a logistical consulting firm in the field of mass retail, and was adamant that she would repeat the experience out on the water, albeit by starting at the beginning.
“The Mini is the perfect school for discovering and learning about the sport”, confirms the skipper of the Pogo 3 Gustave Roussy, who made her debut on the circuit the following year, in 2020, having joined Lorient’s Pôle Course racing cluster. “I’m setting sail without high hopes of a result, but with the aim of going all the way, feeling at ease on the water and enjoying the course. Given that we’ve done a lot of upwind sailing in this season’s races, I hope to have as much downwind sailing as possible with a bit of strong breeze!” explains Sophie, who is already dreaming of long, boisterous surfs in the trade wind.
