From coastal sailing to the open ocean

A Laser coach in Italy, Luca is readying himself for his first singlehanded offshore experience. “I’m doing the Mini Transat to gain experience. When I was younger, I did a lot of sailing, albeit in harbours. The Mini-Transat is an opportunity to sail offshore. I really want to get the most out of this experience. Being alone at sea will give me a chance to get to know myself better.”

To get in some Mini practice, Luca barely had any other option than to go for an old Florence-based prototype dating back to 2001. “I came upon her a bit by chance. Initially I didn’t have any money or a sponsor for a project. I had to work hard to be able to take part in my first races. The owner of my boat couldn’t do the Mini-Transat La Boulangère so he’s loaned me his boat! She’s a fantastic craft. I did the entire refit all alone, from the laminating to the internal fit-out.”

Aware of his boat’s potential, Luca is already casting his mind forward a couple of years. “My boat’s no youngster, so I can’t achieve a good result, but my aim is to put together a more competitive project for 2021.”
