With several years of racing under his belt, in Optimist, then 420 and Class8, Ronan Jézégou took a ten-year break to devote himself to his medical studies. However, once he obtained his thesis in 2018, the first thing he did after setting up his practice near Carhaix, in the centre of Finistère, north-west France, was buy a boat of course. To be specific, it was the Mini 6.50 with which he’s preparing to tackle the Atlantic crossing this autumn.

“Doing a transatlantic passage has always been part of my plans. Ultimately, I said to myself that if I’m going to do it, I may as well make sure that I’m not all on my own, out on a limb”, explains the native of Vannes in south-west Brittany, who is very much in favour of the race format, and above all the concept behind it, without any modern means of communication. My goal is to spend time out on the water and cut myself off from the world”, assures the skipper of the Pogo 2 Diaoulic, whose primary aim is to get himself to the other side of the big pond. “Finishing is the first challenge. Of course, I still have a bit of competitive spirit, but the result is not the priority, even though the race within the race among the pointy boats is bound to be quite stimulating”, admits Ronan. Any apprehension? Strangely, whilst I’ve come into this in search of isolation, that’s also what I’m beginning to dread the most as the start looms!”
