Hailing from the French Alps where he spent the first 20 years of his life doing mountain sports such as skiing, snow kiting and speed riding, Quentin Riché has nevertheless always sailed. “I would often go on cruises with my parents in the Mediterranean, but I’ve also done quite a lot of regattas with my father in IRC or in Surprises” explains the skipper. He naturally chose to study naval architecture and entered the prestigious Southampton University in the United Kingdom. After completing his degree, he spent a year abroad in Australia before joining the Parisian based VPLP architect’s office. What triggered the will to do the Mini Transat? From a very young age I’ve always had this call to go offshore but for quite some time I lacked self-confidence and the courage to do it. Until I realized it was possible when I saw two of my friends from Uni do it (Félix de Navacelle and Matthieu Vincent, who finished 4th and 6th of the 2019 Mini Transat in Production, ed) explains Quentin. He went on to buy his friend Vincent’s former Pogo 3 before leaving his job in the capital to settle in La Rochelle and focus 100% of his time to his Mini project. “I’m living my childhood dream. I’m a natural solitary person and the challenge fits me well says the 33-year-old who doesn’t have a specific objective regarding his ranking. “There are so many unknowns in a race such as the Mini Transat! My goals are first and foremost to cross, to enjoy as much as possible my time on the water, and to be in harmony with my boat.
