Fifth of the previous Mini Transat on a Production boat, Pierre Le Roy is coming back this year with legitimately high ambitions. “I’m not forgetting that on a transatlantic race everything depends on the scenario and that offshore sailing is a mechanical sport, but I’ve done everything I can to be in a situation where I can win” says the sailor from Lille. He built his own prototype, a scow-type beast designed by David Raison that Pierre assembled himself with help from his preparator Cédric Faron at the Nautymor boatyard, before launching the boat this January. “The boat is very similar to Maximum which won the previous two editions with Ian Lipinski and François Jambou” explains the skipper. He rapidly took his marks on board and quickly set the scene by sailing at the front of the fleet from the get-go. He will without a doubt be one if the favorites of this 2021 edition. “I’d be disappointed not to be on the podium in Guadeloupe” admits the meteorologist. Pierre Le Roy built his offshore sailing experience doing UNCL and RORC races. He now splits his time between Lorient where he trains and Villeneuve d’Ascq where he works for Météo France. “Everyone has their own assets on the Mini Transat. Some are experienced sailors; others are excellent handymen… For me, my job is probably my asset. It at least helps me to get consistent results, but first and foremost it allows me to avoid tricky weather situations”.
