The Vendée Globe, the Route du Rhum and The Transat (formerly the OSTAR), have always fuelled Nicolas Cousi’s dreams. “All of them have been punctuated by both drama and exceptional victories. They are legendary solo races, as are the Solitaire du Figaro and the Mini Transat, which I discovered further down the line, through a flurry of media coverage. They were races I believed to be totally inaccessible, especially for a Parisian, like me”, explains the physiotherapist, practitioner and also teacher within EFOM, an institute dedicated to health professionals.
In the course of a conversation on the evening before he set off on a long trip to India and then Nepal, he discovered the abundance of amateurs, like himself, who had taken the plunge and found a way of lining up for the start of these major events. Once in Asia then, his brain was really working overtime. What if he went for it too? “Alone with my map and my compass, I realised that I was pretty comfortable in my own skin and that you have to try your luck”, explains Nicolas. On his return, he got in touch with various people, including Pierre Legendre, who offered him some valuable advice. It was game on at that point. “I hadn’t imagined that it would be so full-on to balance my campaign and my professional life, so making the start has already been a big challenge. Right now, my focus is on trying to sail the best Mini Transat I can and leaving as many pointy boats behind me as possible”, says the skipper, whose 2004 Nivelt Mistral design proudly flies the flag of Telerys Communication, a supplier of networks and telecoms services, with which he has a rather special history. Indeed, not only is the company’s founder one of his patients, but Telerys is also responsible for the telecoms facilities at the KSV medical centre, in Versailles, with which he has strong ties.
