Matthieu Lacharme starting sailing on an Optimist before moving on to a Laser, but he quickly wanted “something bigger”. He raced the Tour du Finistère from 2004 to 2010 on a Quarter Tonner with some friends before investing in a Pogo 1 in 2013 with his wife. “At the beginning it was to get a bit of fresh air” he says. Matthieu has a degree in economics and initially was in charge of employment and local development at the Bobigny town hall, before doing the same for the local community of towns in Savenay. He then opened up a secondhand retail store in Les Sables d’Olonne before going into web development and training in Crac’h.
“I initially got the boat to go on cruises but I was tempted to do the Armen Race in 2014. It was my very first race on a Mini 6.50” explains Matthieu.
Convinced by his first experience, he went on to do multiple other races before changing his old Pogo 1 for a Tip Top in 2018. Racing the Mini Transat was already somewhere in the back of his mind. “Taking part in this race is something I’ve dreamed about for quite some time. Crossing the Atlantic with your own means, being on your own, proving to yourself that you can do it. All of the above are motivation factors as well is the call of the open ocean. Even if I have to admit I’m often seasick” explains the skipper. What would a good Mini Transat be for him? “Making it over to the other side. Being in the good group and having other boats around me to race a bit. Finishing in the Top 3 or Top 5 amongst boats of the same generation as mine”.
