“What does the Mini Transat represent for me? Freedom, pleasure and, soon I hope, the most absolute experience of my life!” explains Marc-Eric Siewert, who is well aware of the fact that some moments will be tougher than others, but several of them will remain etched in his memory forever. “I’m expecting to have to handle some tricky and sometimes unexpected situations, but I am relishing the prospect of some long surfs in the trade wind with some good music, sunrises that belong solely to me and all the things that I have no idea how magical they will be as yet!” explains the German based in Stralsund on the Baltic coast, whose aim is to finish in the top half of the prototype fleet, even though the most important thing is of course to complete the 4,050-mile course and thus prove to himself that all the painstaking work carried out on his 15-year-old prototype last year has borne fruit.
“I think the boat is much more reliable now”, assures the engineer, who specialises in the management of electronic systems, as well as being a coach within the German Olympic Sports association. And what of his sailing background? This ranges from the Optimist to the Laser, as well as many miles amassed as a kid whilst cruising the Baltic Sea with his parents and, further down the line, during his student days, a string of competitions aboard an M34.
