For Louis Mayaud, the Mini Transat is almost a hiccup or, at the very least, a bizarre combination of circumstances. Indeed, the sailor from the Lille city in the north of France, a graduate from HEC, a top French business school, who began his professional career in the coffee trade, was doing a job interview in a company in Bordeaux and decided to stop off in La Rochelle before heading back to Paris. His brief visit proved to be a revelation. “I came face to face with 90 crazy sailors setting sail on the Mini Transat. Though I’ve always dreamed of adventure, up till that point I’d never considered setting off on a race, but I was smitten and everything sprang into action very quickly!” he explains, promptly acquiring the Pogo 3 skippered by Félix de Navacelle (4th in the 2019 edition) and even opting to take nearly a year’s sabbatical from January 2021, whilst working at Quechua, so he could devote all his time to his campaign.
“I hope the race will be an intense experience for me and that I’ll be able to bring my best performance to bear after two years on the circuit”, stresses Louis, who has a Course Croisière EDHEC race to his credit (in 2012) together with a few solid rankings in the Spi Ouest France and the Armen Race, nothing more. “A very successful Mini Transat for me would be a race where I’ve managed to really enjoy myself and push back my own limits”, concludes the sailor, who is particularly looking forward to getting going, a sentiment heightened by the fact that he’s had to recover from a double fracture of the ankle this summer.
