“I was fed up going around the cans!”

A native of Fouesnant in NW Brittany, Guillaume L’Hostis learnt to sail from a very early age and followed what he calls a ‘classic’ route into sailing in which he particularly enjoyed dinghy sailing. “I was fed up going around the cans. I wanted to see what goes on offshore, singlehanded. The Mini-Transat is a great way into that.”

After studying at Staps (Sports Science), Guillaume has gone on to work at Alternative Sailing, a yacht charter company based in La Trinité-sur-Mer. In fact, it is this same employer which is supporting him in his challenge by giving him the use of a fine Mini 6.50. “In the winter I work in Martinique and in April I return to La Trinité. Meantime, I’m also preparing for the Mini-Transat”, he explains. “This will be my first singlehanded Atlantic passage. I’m heading off into the unknown so there’s an adventure element. However, I’m a born racer so I’ll be on the hunt for a fine result!”
