Léo Debiesse arrived on the Mini 6.50 circuit in 2018 with the goal of participating in the Mini Transat that started the next year. However, he took more time than expected to find a boat and to get his project running. But all turned out well in the end for this outdoor enthusiast as the Cévennes native will be at the start of this 23rd edition with three years of experience on the circuit… And he is seen as one of the favorites!
As the reigning French National Single-Handed Offshore Champion in the Mini 6.50 Class, following a remarkable 2020 season which saw Léo win the Les Sables – Les Açores en Baie de Morlaix as well as the Mini en Mai, the Pogo 3 Kelyfos skipper is legitimately going for a podium in the Production category. “Yes, I do have some ambitions for this race. A Top 3 finish would be great, but I have to admit that winning it would make me very happy” says the sailor who is now based out of Lorient where is working hard on his first Transatlantic race with the Lorient Grand Large structure. In parallel, he is preparing various racing boats mainly with the boatyard Nauty’Mor.
Fittings, composite materials, seamanship, paint work… Léo is an all-around worker who is constantly looking to reinforce his technical knowledge, which is one of the reasons that led him to think about doing the famous Mini Transat. “I was a sailing instructor for a time and then I did multiple deliveries of private boats over a few years. But after I while I felt like I was learning less and less. I saw of the Mini as the best school to continue to learn and advance. For me, being at the start of the race was already a big challenge. To make it across the Atlantic will be extraordinary” concludes Léo Debiesse.
