Racing across the Atlantic single-handed has been a dream of mine for many years. The Mini Transat just happens to check off all of those boxes explains Jean-Marie Jezequel. He was, above all else, attracted to the ‘adventure’ part of the race although he isn’t one to shy away from the competition. “I have sailed a great deal on the family boat – a Catboat – but I have to admit that I’ve always liked racing. The confrontation drives me and pushes me to surpass myself” details the Breton sailor who set up his project four years ago with Paul Cloarec. Paul raced in the previous edition of the race in 2019, finishing 9th amongst Production boats. It is now Jean-Marie’s turn to get the best out of their Maxi 6.50 and brave the Atlantic. “Making it over to the other side and enjoying myself are my main goals. I confess that I got hooked by the competition since I got on the circuit and I’ve had to set higher ambitions for myself says Jean-Marie, who adapted well to his new boat. “I’ve been lucky enough to benefit from Paul’s experience and feedback, even though nothing replaces the time you spend on the water” explains the director of the Jézéquel boat yards in Carantec and in Saint-Martin des Champs, who managed to find the right balance between his job and sailing with the help from his team. His objective result-wise? “There are between 10 and 15 boats who can win the Production category. It’s going to be tight! I’d be disappointed if I finish outside the Top 10, satisfied with a Top 5 and delighted to be on the podium. But I prefer not to think too much about the rankings. For me as for many other, this transatlantic will be a true discovery”.
