A native of Santa Marinella, a commune in the metropolitan city of Rome, Giovanni Mengucci has just graduated from the famous naval architecture college in Southampton, in the UK. His goal: to design ever more innovative boats. His participation in the Mini Transat EuroChef obviously has nothing to do with luck. It’s a race which, I hope, will be rewarding both on a personal level and as a competitor. For me it is a personal goal, which stems from a commitment I made to someone very dear to me, who has sadly passed on”, explains the young skipper of the Pogo 3 Alpha Lyrae, who made his debut on the circuit in 2018, before switching things up a gear this year.

To my mind, experience is the cornerstone of this adventure. I hope to find the right balance with the boat and keep to the rhythm of the fleet, even without being physically in contact with them, and be able to resolve all the problems I encounter along the way”, explains the Italian, who sees the event as a springboard. It’s a starting point for my future goals, both professional and sporting. My goal is to use the experience as a platform to develop my academic career and all the notions learned during my preparation”, explains Giovanni, who got into sailing at 5 years of age, on an Optimist, before moving up through the typical Laser and 420 route, whilst also cruising with his family. “I caught the offshore bug with Matteo Miceli, who is preparing to take part in the Class40 round the world race, and I hope it stays with me for a long time to come!”
