Accessing sailing through dinghy sailing – on an Optimist and then a Laser -, Genis Hontoria Nogueroles went on to do a lot of racing in IRC before arriving on the Mini 6.50 circuit in 2018. After three seasons in the Mediterranean punctuated by a string of fine successes, including victory in the Mini Petrolera in 2019, the Spanish sailor, who settled in La Pobla de Vallbona in the province of Valencia, is taking the plunge this year and lining up for the start of the Mini Transat.
“It’s essentially an adventure and a personal challenge for me”, muses the skipper of Blue Oscar, the Nacira 6.50 that won the event in the hands of Aymeric Bellois in the 2013 edition. “Above all, I’d be pleased to make it to Guadeloupe. However, I hope I’ll be able to compete with the best boats from the old generation”, notes Genis, who has the advantage of knowing his steed inside out, as well as being an expert in the field of composite materials. His job? A process engineer at Future Fibres, a company specialising in composite rigs. He is a racer as well as having a good mind it would seem.
