Starting out on the Mini 6.50 circuit in 2006, François Champion took the start of the 2009 Mini Transat on the Production boat Pogoman and finished at an honorable 25th place. Discovering the open ocean, crossing the Doldrums, arriving in Brazil… All of that was an incredible experience for me he assures. And after a 5-year hiatus he decided to come back for seconds and started building a prototype based on a Lombard design. After my first go at the race I promised myself that I’d be back with a competitive boat explains François. It took two years to build the boat which came out of the shed with the goal of participating in the 2019 Mini Transat. But a lack of budget and a change in his personal life put a halt to that project. However, the skipper’s determination stayed unaltered. “This time the goal is to have a tried-and-tested boat and for me to me as ready as can be. Crossing the Atlantic is no small feat even if you’ve already done it. You have to be quite fit” he says. François balances his training sessions in Lorient with his job as a professor of electrical engineering in Le Havre. “It isn’t always easy” he confesses. He will be going for a Top 5 finish in the Prototype rankings with his Mini 6.50 sponsored by Porsche. On paper it looks like there are quite a few sailors that are better than me. But a lot can happen on a transatlantic”. His strength? Without a doubt his experience on the circuit and the time spend the last 3 year making his boat reliable.
