Having joined the Mini 6.50 circuit back in 2005, this year Francesco Renella is making his grand debut in the famous Mini Transat. “It’s fair to say that for a lot of people, it’s a two to four-year build-up before taking the plunge. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a project which has gradually matured through my playmates and my friends. Over time, my passion for sailing in general, and for the Mini in particular, has become greater, more specific and even absolute. As such, it felt to me like it was finally the right moment”, explains the 52-year-old from Genoa, who is readying himself for an experience as rich as it is intense, the likes of which are few and far between in a lifetime, even when you’re a sailing professional like him (shore crew, federation sailing instructor, as well as a skipper for various charter companies in the summer).
His aims between Les Sables d’Olonne and Saint-François? “To sail a clean race, to feel good with my Pogo 2 Koati, to manage to put everything I’ve learned over the last few years to good practice, to learn all I can, to have as much fun as possible with friends who are also my rivals, and to go as fast as possible to get ahead of as many of them as I can”, explains the Italian, who put in his first tacks from a very early age (on a keelboat and then a sports catamaran), and has criss-crossed the length and breadth of the Mediterranean, via the Aegean Sea, the Alboran Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. He has also delivered a Pogo 12.50 between the Azores and Catalonia, which left a lasting impression on him. An impression he hopes will be even more enduring and strong with the Mini!
