Giovanni Mengucci (1000 – ALPHA LYRAE), 21th production boat skipper :“The best is yet to come!”
Giovanni Mengucci was the 21th production boat skipper to cross the finish line of the first leg of the 23rd edition of the Mini Transat EuroChef this Saturday 9 October at 11h06' (UTC). In so doing, the skipper of ALPHA LYRAE took 11 days 21 hours 36 minutes a to complete the 1,350-mile course between Les Sables d’Olonne and Santa Cruz de La Palma.
“It wasn’t the classic first leg of a transatlantic race. I don’t really know what to think about it. I’m really knackered. I haven’t slept for 24 hours, but it’s fantastic to finish here. And it’s not over yet. The best is yet to come. It was long, with a stop in the middle. I was close to running out of food. All I have left is one breakfast. It was high time I finished. It was great fun. At night sometimes, I closed the boat’s hatch to stretch out in the cockpit with no light and look at the stars as the boat powered along at over ten knots! It was fabulous!”
